Before he met Emily Rose at her welcome home party when he was 18 years old, Carter Ausgten Paddelton had cerebral palsy and fell in love with her. He struggled to find a place in life as a less fortunate child because he was constantly referred to as the hammy down kid. He was also referred to as the kid in the wheelchair because he had a visible disability such as cerebral palsy.
He learns many life lessons while living on the family farm with Tyrone Brownine , his wife, and their children as a means of recognizing his aunt's generosity. He discovers that going to the farm has been the most beautiful surprise he could have ever imagined as he reflects on his journey.
