On The Omnivore's Dilemma
Michael Pollan is an author, journalist and a professor of science and environmental journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written many books, articles and essays on the American food system and sustainable agriculture.
He is also the author of “Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual,” “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto,” “The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World,” “A Place of My Own,” and “Second Nature.” Pollan is the recipient of numerous journalistic awards, including the James Beard Award for best magazine series in 2003, and the Reuters-I.U.C.N. 2000 Global Award for Environmental Journalism. Pollan has served as executive editor of Harper's Magazine, and his articles appear in the “Best American Science Writing,” “Best American Essays” and the “Norton Book of Nature Writing” anthologies.
“The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” first published in 2006, was named 1 of the 10 best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review. It won the James Beard Book Award for Writing on Food, and in 2007 was a finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award. There is also a young readers edition available. The documentary film, “Food, Inc.” is partially based upon this book.

On The Botany of Desire
All beings are united by the most basic of desires: making copies of itself. For Pollan, the next logical step was to seriously consider the plants point of view. More specifically: the apple, the tulip, cannabis, and the potato. While we consider them domesticized, that gives the impression that were in charge. Unequivocally, they are in turn manipulating us, each party ensuring the survival of the other species. Further, by looking at the social history of each of these plants, we find highly accurate clues about the history of mankind. We shape them, and they shape us. In tracing our relation to the development of each plant, we unlock a multitude of implications about who we are.

On A Place of My Own
A Place of My Own is the biography of a building, writes Michael Pollan by way of introduction. In the preface of the 2008 edition, Mr. Pollan reflects on his motivations for building a hut in his backyard. He had reasons that many of us can relate to. As we spend more and more of our days at desks, in front of screens, in shopping malls and grocery stores, we become more removed from nature and the process of creating tangible things.
Mr. Pollan embarks on journey to build a house, from beginning to end, from design to construction. Along the way, he learns about the history and philosophy of architecture and, of course, the practicalities of actually building a structure. He warns us, however, that this is not a how-to book. While readers may be inspired to build a house after reading his book, they would be well-advised to seek instruction elsewhere.
