INTRODUCTION
This book was written in response to the many inventors, myself included, who have struggled to get excellent inventions into the marketplace. It is a path strewn with so many unexpected obstacles that the typical inventor gets discouraged long before the half-way point, yet it doesn’t have to be that way.

Entire libraries are dedicated to the process of invention development. This book is intended to cut to the chase: to give you a succinct understanding of the concepts necessary for your invention to succeed without all the technical jargon you don’t really need. However, if you do need additional information on any topic, there are many resources listed throughout the book for you to use.

This book is specifically designed to be a workbook. It is designed to be read, used, reread, and written in. Notice that there is a sidebar that says “Notes” at the bottom of each page. This is for you to write in, draw in, scribble in, summarize in, or actually take notes in (unless you checked this book out at the library). At the end of every chapter there is a “Chapter Checklist.” This is intended to be used as both a review and a reminder of the precise steps you can take to prepare yourself for the next step.

Throughout the book there are samples, documents, forms, worksheets, inventories, resources, and charts. They are meant to be used. In the appendix there are blank copies of these documents intentionally printed in 8 1/2” x 11” format so you can copy them right out of the book and put them to use. In the back there is information for you to order an “Invention Journal.” Get one and use it!

In each chapter there are segments called “That’s When I Learned . . .” Each example is a true story of how I learned a concept necessary for the survival of an invention development business. These concepts were not learned from a textbook or lecture, they are actual lessons learned from the incredible number of mistakes I have made in the school of hard knocks.

My hope is that the information in this book will help inventors all over the world get their products on the market. However, if one person is able to avoid one obstacle that I didn’t, then this entire endeavor has been worthwhile.

I wish you the best,

Bill

PREFACE
I drove home that sunny day feeling better than ever remember feeling. I didn't realize it at the time, but I had just made a decision that would impact the rest of my life. I had chosen freedom over safety. This decision, more than any other, has shaped my life into an adventure beyond my wildest dreams,

After a summer working four, ten hour days, my boss told me, "You now have to work five, eight hour days." We discussed this for a while when I responded, "You don't understand; I will not work five, eight hour days." "You don't understand," he said, "You don't have a choice." I stood up and started packing. "What are you doing?" he asked. "I'm going where I do have choice." "You can't just quit," he said. "You can continue to pay me if you like, but I do have a choice, and I have made it."

I stopped at the rest area on the way home where I realized that there are really only three options: Live in a cardboard box, have a job, or start a business. I eliminated the box option, I had now tried the job option, so there was only one option left. I started a business. In doing so, I believe I have made every mistake there is to make. This decision has brought me more pain, agony, victory, and joy than I could have possibly imagined. It has also given me a perspective I could not have gained any other way.

It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to amortize these experiences over greater good. As a professor, this is my greatest joy - - to do away with textbooks and powerpoint, and spend an hour each day visiting with friends who are about to walk a path I have walked. Not a pristine path of academic sterility, but the twisted, distorted path of real life.

On this path you run into two types of people; the tyrant and the benevolent. The tyrant is really a benevolent who has lost their way. They have chosen safety and hate themselves for doing so. They attempt to fill their void by tyranizing benevolents. They will bless you even though they strive to do otherwise. Draw near to them, as they will be the source of most serendipity that will come your way. The benevolent, on the other hand, has (continued)
