Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"What is truth? That ancient question looms large in our era, full of accusations of fake news. Bruce Bartlett's clear and concise guide reveals how to distinguish reliable journalism from reports riddled with errors, lies, and nonsense. Best of all, Bartlett's manual is so accessible and direct that anyone will benefit from reading it, from high school students to casual news consumers to professional journalists."
—David Cay Johnston, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist

"Bartlett’s latest book, The Truth Matters, is a concise and essential primer filled with information on how best to use and understand the media. It offers techniques and resources that will help anyone who ever wanted to dig deeper into a story or make an educated decision about its accuracy and possible bias."

Library Journal - Audio

04/01/2018
At just over two hours, this book is a quick exploration of news and fake news—how to tell the difference and why it matters. Bartlett provides listeners with an easily digested resource to help ourselves, our staff, and our customers learn how to evaluate sources, check facts, and separate the real from the phony. Terms such as on the record and on background are explained, allowing listeners to make sense of the issues being raised in the current contentious news environment. The delivery of the content is excellent—not too much or too little information and detail: just right. Narrator Pete Cross does a superb job of pacing the text; nonfiction audiobooks that are dense with information need a slightly slower pace for absorption. The only downside in audio format is that there is no way to obtain the outstanding list of resources associated with each topic short of replaying the book with pen and paper at hand. VERDICT Highly recommended for all public libraries.—Gretchen Pruett, New Braunfels P.L., TX
