"Gustavo Bock the millionaire Havana cigar maker...is alleged to be the colonel of the Spanish volunteers...Secretary Long reached a decision...Bock should not be allowed to pass through the blockade." -Detroit Free Press, May 25, 1898

What secrets did Gustavo Bock discover about raising, manufacturing and selling fine tobacco that allowed him to eventually become the largest cigar manufacturer in Cuba?

Prior to the Cuban Revolution, Gustavo Bock (1825–1910), President of the Havana Tobacco Company, was known throughout the world as the greatest manufacturer of fine cigars that the industry ever produced. In 1904, Bock published a 30-page book "The Truth about Havana Cigars."

Bock and his company were the first manufacturers to develop the now famous tobacco-growing section known as Remates in the Vuelta Abajo district of Cuba, where they held extensive farms.

It was from a special blend consisting chiefly of this tobacco that Senor Bock first discovered the possibility of producing cigars, which, while very mild, carried a fine flavor and aroma that would satisfy and yet not satiate. On the success of his work along this line it is needless to elaborate. The Bock cigars were well known as a standard of excellence throughout the smoking world prior to the Cuban Revolution.
Senor Bock as managing director in Havana naturally took especial pride in caring for the great factory, the product of which bore his name.

In introducing his book, Bock writes:

"In Having, during a residence on this Island of forty-six years, devoted all my time to discovering, to the minutest detail, the best method for the production of the highest quality of Havana Cigars, I respectfully submit the following pages to all intelligent smokers of good cigars. The cigars manufactured under my personal direction in the twenty-three factories controlled by the Havana Tobacco Company cannot be equaled in character, in quality or in workmanship by any other cigars in the world."
