About the Author

Gavin Andrews is a psychiatrist who is Professor of Psychiatry in the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales, and Director of the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, a joint university and hospital facility.

Mark Creamer is Director of the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health and a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne. He is a clinical psychologist with many years of experience in the field of traumatic stress from both research and clinical perspectives.

Rocco Crino is a clinical psychologist at St. Vincent's Hospital. He is Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and Manager of Psychology at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney.

Caroline Hunt is a clinical psychologist and Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, University of Sydney. She is a clinician with the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression, Sydney.

Lisa Lampe is a psychiatrist and Lecturer, School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales. She is a clinician with the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression, Sydney.

Andrew Page was a clinical psychologist at St. Vincent's Hospital and a clinician with the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression. He is currently Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of Western Australia, Perth.

Description: This book provides a comprehensive review of the phenomenonology and treatment of the various anxiety disorders as described in DSM-IV. The first edition of this book was published in 1994.
Purpose: The purpose is to thoroughly review the anxiety disorders as currently understood and classified in DSM-IV. This is certainly a worthwhile objective, as these disorders are among the most common of psychiatric disturbances.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for two target audiences — clinicians who treat patients with anxiety disorders and the patients themselves.
Features: The book has a rather interesting format. After two introductory chapters, each anxiety disorder is thoroughly discussed over three chapters. The first chapter describes the anxiety disorder in detail, the second is a clinician guide describing treatment modalities, comorbid conditions, and so forth, and the third is a patient treatment manual designed to be read and used by patients. This unique and helpful design is certainly one of the book's strengths. A thorough reference list is provided at the end, but there is no index.
Assessment: This is a terrific contribution to the field. Its unique structure, designed for both clinician and patient, is a real asset. Because the anxiety disorders are among the most common of psychiatric disturbances, this book should be used by any clinician who treats patients with these syndromes. Educating patients about their condition and involving them in their treatment is an important component in practicing medicine, and this book's design makes this task simpler.
