Offers information on some 800 transport proteins, organized into 55 families of structurally related transporters. Organization stresses the structural, mechanistic, and biological properties common to closely related proteins, provides an objective basis for identifying potential evolutionary relationships between distantly related groups of proteins, and establishes a system for classifying and characterizing newly described transporters. Entries provide information on nomenclature, biological sources, phylogenetic relationships, physical and genetic characteristics, multiple amino acid sequence alignments, and database accession numbers. Description: This book is a compilation of data sets on transmembrane transporter proteins: sequences, protein families, molecular weights, physical properties. Many species, from microorganisms via plants to humans, are presented to generate parallel data sets across genera and specializations.
Purpose: The authors have assembled information on almost 800 polypeptides. They present their work as a basis for comparison. Consequently, the reader is left to interpret the data amassed here. Although the collection is useful as an overview, the plain presentation of facts does not surpass computerized data bases significantly. In other words, the absence of any interpretation detracts from the value of this scientific work.
Audience: The possible audience includes protein chemists, physiologists, and geneticists.
Features: Illustrations are restricted to phylogenetic trees and schematic diagrams of the organization of the proteins in the plasma membrane (one per protein family). The book is dominated by sequence alignments. Very few data refer to functional properties. The book is not meant to be read in a linear fashion; it is a thesaurus of proteins. The biggest drawback is the absence of references.
Assessment: There is no easy way to use this book in conjunction with others on this subject. The reader gets caught in a "vicious circle" of data collections. How to escape? Close the book and relax. As an experimental scientist, you are used to frustration. A cup of coffee or tea will help.
