The Transcontinental Railroad

Overview

People today refer to the Midwestern and prairie states as flyover country. During the Civil War, crossing those areas was the biggest obstacle in uniting the East and West Coasts of our divided nation. An act of Congress in 1862 authorized the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroad companies to build a railroad that would link the coasts. Seven years later, on May 10, 1869, an overwhelmingly immigrant labor force completed the task when a rail line was join in Promontory, Utah. The states had become united at last.

Gr 8 Up—Common U.S. history topics are meticulously explored and analyzed, using primary sources in addition to contemporaneous newspaper accounts and public documents. The majority of each book provides a chronological narrative of events that also includes background information. While the subjects are of interest to the audience, the writing style is, unfortunately, dry, and much of the narratives is tedious. There is also a lot of emphasis on manifest destiny in several volumes. Photographs and maps complement the text but add little to it. VERDICT While report writers will benefit from the historical accuracy, those seeking livelier accounts would do better to look elsewhere.
