Overview

One-Horn's daughter is not like the others of her kind. Born of a human father, she lacks the horns so prized by her people and is scorned even by her own mother. Her only chance for escape is to capture one of the legendary flying horses and ride it to freedom.

This strange, feral girl begins a dangerous journey of love, death, and betrayal that will earn her a new name: Rhiannon, the rider no one can catch.

Rescued and taken to the home of Lewen, a young man just beginning to understand his own magical potential, Rhiannon is fascinated by the human world and by Lewen. Together they travel through a land where the dead walk and ghosts haunt the living, a place where Rhiannon encounters dark forces that endanger all of Eileanan. But to save the land, she must convince Lewen and the other apprentice-witches to trust the word of a wild half-human girl.

The Barnes & Noble Review
The Tower of Ravens is the first book in a trilogy by Australian writer Kate Forsyth, author of the popular Witches of Eileanan saga (The Pool of Two Moons, The Cursed Towers, et al.).

Set in Forsyth's signature world of Eileanan, a realm practically supersaturated with magic and myth, the novel chronicles the adventures of Rhiannon, a faerie half-breed who escapes her brutally abusive clan by means of a winged horse -- and goes in search of her place in the world of humans. Rhiannon was born and raised in a herd of satyricorns, a race of ferocious horned faeries. Although her mother is a full-blooded satyricorn, her father was human, and as a half-breed -- lacking hooves, a tail, and horns -- she is looked upon as an outcast and frequently mistreated. The ill-tempered satyricorns are consummate hunters, and seeing no way to escape them on land, Rhiannon vows to do the impossible: to catch and ride a winged horse to freedom. But once free, where will the wild faerie go -- and how will she survive?

Steeped in Celtic folklore and mythology, Forsyth's The Tower of Ravens is reminiscent of bestselling fantasy works by other Australian writers, namely Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters novels and Cecilia Dart-Thornton's Bitterbynde trilogy (The Ill-Made Mute, The Lady of the Sorrows, and The Battle of Evernight). Featuring a compelling female protagonist, this richly imagined escapade -- which has a heavy romantic undercurrent -- should appeal to fantasy and romance fans alike. Paul Goat Allen
