Jamie L. B. Deenihan (she/her) is a teacher and member of SCBWI and the 12X12 Picture Book Challenge. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's of Education Degree in Reading. Jamie lives in Suffield, Connecticut, with her two wiggly-toothed children. She loves long naps at the dentist, mint-flavored floss, and helping her kids correspond with their tooth fairies.

Erin Hunting (she/her) is an Australian illustrator who has worked in visual development for companies such as Nickelodeon, Netflix, and Sesame Street. She has also worked in the comic industry and children's publishing for the past ten years on titles such as Garfield, Archie, and Adventure Time. She is drawn especially to quirky and fun storytelling that reflects her art style. She is owned by one cat.

Blue, an aspiring tooth fairy, is assigned to retrieve a child’s lost tooth on Christmas Eve—the final test before officially joining the “Toothtopia Tooth Fairy Team.” But when Blue arrives, Santa is at the girl’s house, too, and he insists that nothing steal thunder from his deliveries (“We can’t share Christmas Eve!”). After engaging in a series of competitions to decide who should leave (fencing with a toothbrush and candy cane, among them), the opponents realize that they’ve made a mess of the house and the holiday’s meaning. The cartoon-style art is energetic and eager to please, rendered in colors as bright as holiday lights, but readers may grow impatient waiting for Deenihan and Hunting to reach the titular face-off. Ages 3–7. (Oct.)

When Veda loses her first tooth on Christmas Eve, an aspiring tooth fairy must battle Santa for the chance to leave her something.

In Deenihan's wordy text, Santa Claus (who, like the protagonist fairy and the little girl, appears white with light skin) is surprisingly cranky and territorial about Christmas Eve gift-giving. "Please feel free to come back any other night of the year," he tells Blue, a fairy on his first lost-tooth mission and out to prove himself worthy of "a spot on the Tooth Fairy Team." The stakes are high: If he fails to "locate and retrieve the client's lost tooth" he will "be assigned to the polishing department for one year"—the worst job ever, apparently. But Santa won't budge when Blue makes his case: "We can't share Christmas Eve!" And so begins a raucous competition that causes a mess, upending a plate bearing cookies and a carrot. Also on that plate is a letter addressed to both of them that provokes a change of heart in the grinchy Santa. He and Blue clean up, and Blue takes Veda's tooth and leaves a coin (hard to see in the busy picture), while Santa puts presents under the tree. They leave a note, too, and then Santa takes the triumphant Blue back to Toothtopia. The garish illustrations are more often overcrowded than not, a problem exacerbated by the oddly out-of-sync candy-colored palette.
