Overview

In 1986 the first edition of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis, edited by R. Gokal, was published. In 1989 the third edition of Peritoneal Dialysis, edited by K.D. Nolph, was published. Both books were widely recognized for their comprehensive discussion of this particular field. Rather than edit new editions of each of these books separately, two of the most prominent figures in this field have decided to combine their knowledge and enthusiasm in this single book: The Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis.
The book is unique in its detailed discussion of a complete range of topics, including new advances in our understanding of the physiology of peritoneal dialysis, peritoneal dialysis kinetics, clinical results and a chapter dealing with the concepts of intraperitoneal chemotherapy. These examples of the dynamic nature of the field further illustrate the importance of this textbook, and make it required reading for everybody working within the field of peritoneal dialysis.

Theoretical and practical aspects of peritoneal dialysis are covered in this very comprehensive textbook. It is easy-to-read, seamlessly integrated, and contains many excellent illustrations. The purpose is to provide a useful resource for both clinical and research problems, and a balance between new approaches and contentious issues. These objectives are very worthy and have been well met. Nephrologists, fellows, nurses, nurse clinicians, and/or physician assistants caring for peritoneal dialysis patients are the intended audience. There are four editors and 31 contributors from ten countries. The book is very well planned, as chapters are set up in a logical sequence and all relevant areas are covered. The writing is succinct and clear, supplemented by excellent illustrations and tables. There is some overlap of materials, but this is an advantage as themes are presented in different ways. Chapters on functional structure of the peritoneum, microcirculation, and transport physiology are particularly good. The tables on the pharmacokinetic chapter are extensive and complete. Chapters on adequacy, nutrition, and peritonitis are very well written, concise, and informative. The chapter on peritoneal dialysis in special situations is provocative and solid. Chapters on outcomes, registry data, and the CANUSA study are balanced and illuminating. The chapter on peritoneal dialysis in developing countries is a nice addition. References are pertinent but perhaps a bit extensive. The pediatric peritoneal dialysis chapter is welcome. This is a good reference textbook for the library of medical professionals involved with the care of peritoneal dialysis patients. It is a niceaddition to existing literature because of the concise focus, broad coverage of issues, and international perspective. The physical presentation is of very high quality. The tables are informative and the illustrations are very helpful and enhance the message of the text. This is an improved version of the first edition, with four editors and a new group of contributing authors. I recommend upgrading to the second edition.
