Description: This is an overview of the examination of the newborn (ENB) and the newborn infant physical exam (NIPE) screening used in the United Kingdom. It provides historical background, covers the exams, and concludes with the referral system in the U.K. There are several useful tables and clear photographs of skin conditions, but less accurate representations of the skeletal system.
Purpose: The purpose is to meet the changing requirements for U.K. student midwives, neonatal nurses, and other providers of the ENB as well as the NIPE screening, which focuses on the eyes, heart, hips, and testes. The areas this book addresses are those linked to term neonatal unit admission diagnosis and are meant to aid in the early recognition of abnormalities and timely referrals to the medical team. It is brilliant to link the highest incidence of readmissions and diagnosis to the content..
Audience: The audience includes U.K. undergraduate midwifery students, neonatal nurses, and other nonmedical providers of newborn care. It is difficult to determine if the book meets the needs of U.K. student midwives because in the U.S., midwives are masters prepared CNMs and not undergraduates.
Features: The chapter on maternal history is particularly thorough and clear. The physical exam is also quite thorough in a "top to toe" organizational method and concludes with a concise overview of the NIPE and timely pathways for referral within the U.K. system. I found it interesting that the book concludes with another overview of each body system and why it is so important to diagnose and refer in a timely manner. The table of referral specialists and timescale would be particularly useful to U.K. students and could be a template for referrals anywhere. The "Think point" textboxes, which ask students useful local resource or historical questions to foster deeper, practical thinking, are helpful. Also nice are the "Clinical tip" textboxes, which direct students to resources such as guidelines and available leaflets. The list of figures and tables make for easy referencing and the references are up to date.
Assessment: As a U.S. certified nurse midwife who performs newborn physical exams as part of my regular practice, I found this book interesting but a bit of a challenge. It is clearly written by a U.K. provider for U.K. midwifery students who are undergraduates, whereas in the U.S., the majority of midwives are masters prepared clinicians (which is too long a discussion for this review). Therefore, while this book is interesting and well written, it may not be appropriate for U.S. midwives.
