But six years later, the couple reunites. Angel, who inherited loads of money from a beloved uncle, has amassed a fortune of her own as a corporate CEO. She’s got a plan to legitimize DJ and the Kings so they can get out of “the game.” But just when they’re ready to retire, the Kings turn down a hit—with an entirely unexpected outcome. A powerful organization has eyes on them and coerces their help with implied threats against loved ones, notably Angel. Escaping this criminal life may not be remotely possible. Garcia’s hard-hitting series opener spotlights a flawed protagonist who commits murder for his inner-city gang. It’s a sharp contrast to his absorbing romance with Angel. The pair’s rich backgrounds and the slang-laden dialogue often energize the narrative. The book’s latter half switches gears by focusing on the Illuminati, from its sordid history to newly introduced characters tied to this organization of “many arms.” This further enriches a strong cast, which includes legendary killer Joaquin “Monsta” Marquez and Olivia Rothschild, the mysterious “Princess of Death.” As Garcia has a sequel in the wings, this installment builds more to a cliffhanger than any sort of climax. Suspense nevertheless rises as DJ and Angel’s circumstances turn decidedly precarious.

A gripping tale of crime and romance with an indelible cast.
