Thucydides was a Greek historian and author and is known as the father of "scientific history". The use of rigid methods of evidence-gathering and analysis without reference or intervention by the gods has been clearly stated by himself in association with his works.

He has also been referred to as the father of the school of political realism, which views the relations between nations as based on might rather than right. His texts are still studied internationally at advanced military colleges.

More generally, Thucydides showed an interest in developing an understanding of human nature to explain behaviour in such crises as plague, massacres, as in that of the Melians, and civil war.

His speeches are explained in this edition by Richard Claverhouse Jebb, who was a Professor of Greek at Glasgow from 1875 to 1889, and Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge from 1889 until the time of his death.
