In 1881, John Oliver Miller along with his wife and his extended family left Butler County, Pennsylvania behind drawn by the promise of finding good farm and ranch land in the vast Uncompahgre Valley "and gold," in the rugged mountains of southwestern Colorado. They left with their covered wagons, breeding livestock and crop seeds to discover a completely different lifestyle waiting for them. Homesteading a 320-acre plot of land, once occupied by the famous Ute Indian leader Ouray. They begin their gold prospecting venture deep into the saw-toothed San Juan Mountains. Finding far more than they could ever have expected. Battles are fought, and vast fortunes are found and lost in the process.
