Overview

The news of snow in Egypt and across the Middle East made headlines in the international media in late 2013, and many people who live in the region saw snow for the first time in their lives. It was a rare event, something that does happen sometimes, but not too often – the last snow fall in Cairo was 112 years ago. Unknown to most people, however, there is a region in Egypt which receives snow every year. It’s not like the Alps, but every winter at least a little snow falls in the Sinai High Mountain Region around the town of St. Catherine, in the centre of the Sinai Peninsula.

This little free ebook presents rare photos of snow in and around the town of St. Catherine, taken on several occasions during the last 5 years. It has been designed with the smart phones and tablets in mind, but should work just as fine on a computer screen.

Take a tour of the Sinai high mountains, and enjoy your snowy trip in Egypt!

About the Author

Zoltan has been on the road from early on, having grown up and lived in several countries on three continents. He first visited the Sinai in 1992, but only settled there much later in 2005. Nature and culture have always been in his focus along his travels, and he has found both in and around St. Katherine. He lived in the Jabaleya Bedouin community on an ongoing basis until 2011. These days he spends more time away, but still visits and stays with his friends in the Sinai for extended periods of time regularly, and is connected to the community in many ways. Working as a web designer and developer, he has created several publications and websites to promote the region and responsible tourism, and is involved in restoring the Bedouin gardens. He had also worked for an EU project mapping treks across South Sinai and training local Bedouin guides. His photos and/or articles were published in publications including Oasis Magazine, Eternal Egypt, Egypt Independent and Lonely Planet’s Discover Egypt.
