It’s good that mankind is taking note of his effects on the environment. However, many of the world’s environmental problems cannot be solved by Man. We cannot change the Earth’s orbit or declination of its axis, nor can we control sunspot activity, solar storms or meteorite collisions. The Earth is a dynamic place. Our planet undergoes continual change – variation of ocean and atmospheric currents, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the continually readjustment of the planet’s geography as the tectonic plates creep slowly to new positions. These actions all play a role in creating drought, floods, and famine; as well as giving Man bountiful mineral wealth, food and water.
What role can Man play in improving his environment? Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the entire population of the world when it comes to conservation, pollution, and population. Despite the inability of the developed nations to control events in underdeveloped and emerging economies, there is still much that can be done. Air and water pollution can be minimized. More efficient use of energy can be undertaken. Education of the world’s masses must be improved before environmental matters can be properly addressed..
The Sky Will NOT Fall concentrates its efforts on energy matters that affect the human population both directly and indirectly. Man cannot survive without adequate energy, but he must use it wisely. Fossil and nuclear fuels have made it possible for large segments of the population to climb the ladder to today’s economic wealth and prosperity. However, fossil and nuclear energy are dependent on finite resources.
What effects do fossil fuels have on the environment? Does their use pollute to the extent that the planet’s life is in danger? Nuclear fuels came into being after World War II. Are they dangerous? These fuels have propelled world economies to new heights. The world is not a perfect place, nor do any of the fossil fuels and nuclear fuels offer perfection. However, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Hopefully, you will be able to judge their importance to the future of humanity.
The book includes a scientific appraisal of primary resource reserves, productive capability, economic feasibility, and environmental impact. A short history of the petroleum industry includes some fascinating stories about early pioneers in their search for oil - wildcatting, wild gushers. All the many successes and just as many failures are part of the industry.
What energy sources can supplement and eventually replace fossil and nuclear energy? What is the present status of alternate energy sources? Which ones are economically feasible? Can any of them supplement large portions of our primary energy sources? We will take a close look at solar, wind, geothermal, tidal and biofuels. Furthermore, each resource will be analyzed and compared to the primary energy resources – oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear.
Ethanol fuel will be analyzed and compared to petroleum source fuels and coal. So will other biofuels. Deep underground nuclear waste storage site at Yucca Mountain will be specifically addressed. Modern coal-fired power plants receive our attention, especially the large reductions of air pollution. Solar and wind generated energy are not always feasible. Where are they feasible? What about the feasibility of geothermal energy? What about tidal and current energy generation?
The Sky Is NOT Falling will also investigate and evaluate the effects of the recent oil blowout and spill at the BP DeepHorizon well in the Gulf of Mexico. The April 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan at the Fukushima nuclear power plant will receive close examination.
The book takes a good look at electric and hybrid cars and electric light bulbs – incandescent, CFL, and LED. The efficiency, feasibility, and status are all examined.
To “sweeten the pot” many photographs, maps, diagrams, and illustrations are strategically located within the text. The author attempted to cover as many controversial subjects related to the climate debate as possible. In spite of this, there will still be subjects many readers feel should have been included, and for such omission, the author apologizes.
