Overview

Cicely Denfeld, a young London schoolteacher, has disturbing dreams about strangers. In her sleep she experiences the activities of Charles Ryder and Vivian Venables, Americans she does not know. The pair's investigation of a stolen government document leads them to a hazardous world of closely guarded secrets.

The story swerves between Cicely, who starts seeing a psychiatrist and struggles to make sense of her perplexing dreams, and the uncertain prospects and ruthless opponents Charles and Vivian contend with in their inquiries. Cicely's psychiatrist, Dr. McClellan, diagnoses her condition as a neurotic anxiety, and analyzes her dreams as a means of uncovering a likely repressed traumatic experience. Clues found in the mysterious document lead Charles and Vivian to an awe-inspiring hidden facility.

Cicely, Charles and Vivian follow paths that may eventually bring them together and pose startling ethical questions. Are there valid reasons to conceal vital information from the general public? The humanity of the protagonists is compelling, but their daring search for truth and independence pits them against powerful forces and exceptional intelligences that work against their best plans.

About the Author

Carlos Valrand is an author and engineer living in Texas, and a contributor to the website Internet Looks (internetlooks.com). He has a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech, and an MS in Finance from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Valrand has participated as an engineer and manager in NASA and Department of Defense projects such as the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, the Strategic Defense Initiative, the MIM-104 Patriot missile system, and the USAF C-5A and C-130 aircraft.

He has authored various aerospace system functional requirements documents and technical papers, and has developed and taught courses in HTML, simulations, aerodynamics, and spaceflight-related subjects. While at Georgia Tech, he contributed to student publications.

The character of Vivian Venables was truly one of a kind. The author did an incredible job at making her headstrong and independent. She is practical and doesn't back down. Another thing I liked particularly about this book is how sophisticated the description of surroundings is yet how I still understand everything. The scenes drawn by the author in front of you are very comfortable and on point. Valrand leaves the reader wanting for more with the good suspense building.
