The Silverado Squatters
The Silverado Squatters is a book by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1883. It is a travel memoir that recounts Stevenson's two month honeymoon to Napa Valley, California, with his wife Fanny Vandegrift. She had just gotten her divorce from her first husband when the author made his way over to America to marry her - and at the time, he was pretty seriously ill with bronchitis, and also financially broke. So broke that while the couple first went to the Hot Springs Hotel in Calistoga, they couldn't afford the $10 a week fee, so ended up in an abandoned bunkhouse at an old mining camp called 'Silvarado' (which today is called the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park) near Mount Saint Helena.
