About The Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859- 1930) was a prolific writer who shaped the genre of modern detective fiction. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where he encountered the eccentric professor Joseph Bell, the man who would serve as the inspiration for his iconic Sherlock Holmes character. After serving as a doctor for a few years, Conan Doyle turned to writing. His literary career was closely tied to the fortunes of The Strand magazine which ran from 1891 to 1950 and included stories from many of the leading writers of the age, such as H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie and P. G. Wodehouse. His influence on detective fiction has been unparalleled and the character of Sherlock Holmes remains wildly popular today. Sherlock
