CHAPTER 1

There's a magical place from which I come called Crystal Falls. It lies beyond the clouds, above where the eyes can see. One day I will return to Crystal Falls, taking back a treasured gift of memories I gathered from a little boy I hold close to my heart. His name is Javlin. My name is Bingo and I am a six-year-old golden retriever. This is our story that begins several years ago in a warm, cozy house filled with loving energy.

Javlin and I shared the same fun activities that most best friends do, like ... ... dropping my tennis ball into the bathtub during bath time,

... playing keep-away with Javlin's balled-up socks,

... giving doggie tongue baths when I felt they were needed,

... pressing a balloon between our snouts,

... eating broccoli from under the kitchen table, playing hide-n-seek,

... and my personal favorite, playing Frisbee in the evenings after chasing fireflies.

Javlin and I were inseparable. It was as if we had come from the same litter, except that I had a cold, wet nose and longer whiskers.

One morning, I awoke after a peaceful sleep curled up next to Javlin's feet and was looking forward to another eventful day. After stretching and yawning, I inched my way up to Javlin to give him a nuzzle. Javlin didn't appear to feel well. He had a sharp pain in his side. Later that morning he left with his Mom and Dad. I was confused and lonely because Javlin was gone for a few days. I just thought that he was visiting Grandma and Grandpa Kidd.

One drizzly afternoon, Javlin came home. However, instead of greeting me with a cheerful smile, he was carried up to his room by his Dad. Javlin looked weary and sad. Wagging my tail, I excitedly ran up the stairs and entered his room. Javlin lifted his head halfway up and attempted a smile. The usual twinkle in his eyes was clouded over like the stars on a hazy night.

As the days drifted by, Javlin's condition showed no sign of improvement. Several times he was gone for what seemed like weeks. Each time upon his return, my tail would wag with the excitement that he would be strong and playful again, like other pups his age. He always attempted to play with me and show me love, as he did before, but it was never the same. Although I could not understand it, Javlin had developed a cancerous growth in his stomach that was rapidly spreading throughout his body.

One special morning, Javlin awoke with the bright twinkle back in his eyes. He called to me as he trudged down the stairs and out the back door. I began panting and wagging my tail with excitement because I knew this meant we would play Frisbee in the back yard. While Javlin sat contentedly on the hammock, I began to search the yard for our Frisbee.

My usually reliable nose could not locate it, and my search became frantic. I did not want to let Javlin down.

Then I heard a meowing sound coming from the garden. It sounded as though a cat was invading our territory! I began to worry that my search for the Frisbee would become distracted with the desire to chase the cat. I leapt into the garden and landed in front of a golden colored Frisbee. The meowing sound stopped and there was no sign of the invading cat. As I cautiously approached the Frisbee, it began to glow. Feeling a bit frightened, I sniffed it with suspicion. The smell seemed familiar. So I clenched the Frisbee in my mouth and ran out of the garden to the hammock.
