The Shape of the Universe
Poetry isn't cheap. The creation process is time-consuming, costly, and often painful like all art. Poets create because they love the process and the product. My life is the raw material and nothing is off limits to use.
The Shape of the Universe is one woman’s perspective on life, love, and the physical universe.

About the Author

Pat Edwards lives near Madison, Wisconsin, but over the years has lived many different places in the U.S. and Europe. She has a BA in English from the University of Southern California. She works currently as an IT Project Manager consultant to pay the mortgage. All poets have a second job; even the great Rumi worked as a teacher.

I believe being a poet and writer requires a willingness (and some skill) to tell others honestly what you feel and see in the hope that my experience resonates with your own. Our shared humanity is truly the song.

Poetry Ain’t Cheap*
*what I said to the Borders’ Barrista when I paid $23.95 for one book of poetry

Poetry costs a lot.
I’ve maxed out my credit cards on a lost weekend
chasing assonance and consonance.
I’d take out a second mortgage
if it would get me that perfect metaphor.

I’ve sunk to begging, “Buddy, can you spare a rhyme?”
And offered hyperbole, “My kingdom for a quatrain!”

But I’d be out on eBay® accepting the devil’s bid (and you know you would, too)
when you’re jonesin’ for those laurel leaves
you’d sell yours AND your mama’s for that eternal line:
to light a candle that burns at both ends,
to hear what the thunder said,
to walk down the road not taken.
