Overview

This is the second novel in the trilogy The Shangrilla Artifacts, A Tale of Leadership Lost.
In the second of the three ancient scroll, King Shang, worried about his only son's accepting "an excursion to the lowlands", which he knows may mean something much more ominous, reveals his own experience on such an excursion to The Woman in Black, who tries to enlist the prince's classmates in an attempt to save him from a similar horror.
Dr. Lichtenstein, the translator of the scroll, and his friend Tony Nakamichi endure subtle and not-so-subtle threats from someone who wants them to relinquish the Shangrilla Artifacts.

About the Author

Tony Annesi’s writing started with poetry and short fiction and then followed his martial arts career with columns for INSIDE KARATE MAGAZINE (Tales of the Dojo and The Dojo Files) and articles for MARTIAL ARTS MASTERS, SELF-DEFENSE WORLD, INSIDE KUNG-FU, THE INTERNATIONAL FIGHTER, and BLACK BELT. He has authored the privately published Cracking the Kata Code, The Road to Mastery, Principles of Advanced Budo, Sudden Attack Defense, Elevated Elementals, and Comparative Aiki in Action, all them are now, or are soon to be, ebooks.
His short story collection "1969, Loss of Innocence" is available as an e-book and a paperback. He has also written an adventure novel sequel to "The Shangrilla Artifacts" trilogy called "An Atlantis of One".

At first I thought there were references that had been done before then I realized what was happening: the author is presenting a time before recorded time and the allusions are intended as the geneses of references we know. In the format of a sword and sorcery novel, Tony Annesi presents an entire origin story that, appropriate to the ironies in his three main storylines, has its own unwritten origin. Annesi took many creative chances and, in my opinion, succeeded.

As a kid on Saturday mornings, I'd watch old serial shorts films from the 1930s and 40s. Flash Gordon with Buster Crabbe and The Phantom Empire with Gene Autry were my favorites. The Shangrilla Artifacts reminds me of those serials except for the sexier and more violent aspects that serials in those days could not have, and a thought-provoking aspect that serials in those days never considered having--a clever balance of the familiar and the novel. I found the three novels thoroughly enjoyable.
