About the Author

Christopher Lloyd graduated with a double-first class degree in history from Cambridge University. Christopher became Technology Editor with The Sunday Times newspaper in London and is now a best-selling author of more than 15 books on world history including What on Earth Happened? The Complete Story of the Planet, Life and People from the Big Bang to the Present Day (Bloomsbury) and the series of What on Earth? Timelines. He is in great demand as a lecturer and public speaker throughout the world at conferences, educational seminars, museums, festivals and schools.

Andy Forshaw graduated with a BA in graphic design and illustration from London’s Central St. Martins College. In 2010, Andy and Christopher teamed up to found What on Earth Publishing with a view to establishing new ways of making big history accessible to all ages. Andy has since individually created more than 5,000 illustrations that are featured in the range of What on Earth? Timelines. When not illustrating, Andy can be found exploring the countryside on his bike.

Dr. Nick Walton devises and delivers programs of study for school and university students, as well as for members of the general public. As Executive Secretary to the International Shakespeare Association he helped organize the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth World Shakespeare Congresses in Brisbane (2006), Prague (2011), and Stratford/London (2016) respectively. Nick has written introductory material for the Penguin editions of Timon of Athens and Love’s Labour’s Lost, as well as contributing a chapter on Glen Byam Shaw to the book Director’s Shakespeare, an entry in the forthcoming Cambridge World Shakespeare Encyclopaedia on Shakespeare Societies, and multiple chapters in Dorling Kindersley’s The Shakespeare Book (published 2015). 

Nick is co-author of The Shakespeare Timeline Wallbook published in 2014, a giant version of which can be viewed in the Birthplace garden. He has worked with the Actors’ Shakespeare Project (Boston, USA) on two of their Shakespearian productions, and has been a guest speaker at the British Museum, Central School of Speech and Drama, The Siegfried Sassoon Fellowship, and the National Theatre. Nick was one of the presenters for the RSC’s Hamlet web resource produced by the BBC, and for their Massive Open Online Course on Much Ado About Nothing and Othello.

This foldout book expands to create a six-foot-long removable timeline of Shakespeare’s life, featuring panels devoted to his plays. Cartoon figures, drawn in a clear-line style, appear in key dramatic scenes, accompanied by quotations and summaries that readers can examine through an included magnification sheet (on its own, the font used for the recaps and context is almost comically small). Supplementing the timeline and its miniature theatrical stagings is the “Wallbook Chronicle,” which is designed to look like a broadsheet newspaper filled with fictitious Shakespeare-related stories (“Stars crossed as West Side lovers take a tragic turn,” reads the headline for a faux review of West Side Story). ”Children LOVE the What on Earth? format and this is a book that I have used in class frequently. Children who claim to have no interest in Shakespeare are drawn in and can’t help but ask questions about what they see and read. It is an excellent starting point for further work! This book is a valuable resource for history – life in Elizabethan times, history of the theatre, costume, buildings, etc. – and literacy- the plays, language, etymology etc. However, although the subject matter here is mainly history/ literacy, children can learn a lot about presenting information in different formats, evaluating its success and then applying this in contexts across the curriculum.

The book is a facsimile of a newspaper covering all things Shakespeare: his death, famous performances, preservation of Shakespearean sites and materials, films, and historical references and analyses. Also offered are fun facts, sonnets, a quiz, and a faux newspaper classifieds section. While the tone is light and occasionally a bit arch, a significant amount of historical data is presented. In addition, students will pore over the graphic novel—like illustrations. The title's shelf life, however, is questionable, owing to the lengthy foldout time line and the removable plastic magnifying sheet.
