The Secret Life of Becky Miller
Popular freelance writer and conference speaker Sharon Hinck draws on her experience as a home-schooling mother of four to create Erma Bombeck-like episodes that tickle the funny bone and touch the heart. Hinck's debut novel is an amusing yet inspiring look at a woman whose efforts to become the consummate wife, mother, and Christian often trigger her madcap imagination. In hilarious Walter Mitty fantasies, Becky Miller defeats attacking Ninjas, wins grueling NASCAR races, and repairs orbiting satellites. If only this frazzled stay-at-home mom with three young kids could finish her teaching degree, do great things for God, and still have energy left for her husband! But with little time to become the super-mom a national magazine thinks she is, Becky suddenly faces even greater challenges that reveal what's most important-from God's perspective. Johanna Parker's dramatic narration underscores the laugh-out-loud humor and profound truth in this compelling portrayal of a struggling housewife learning to trust the Lord. "Christian authors are giving the literary world a run for their money, and Sharon Hick is at the front of the pack. The Secret Life of Becky Miller, written in James Thurber's Walter Mitty-style, packs an Emeril-sized BAM!"-Anne L. Mulligan

Editorial Reviews

Violet Nesdoly

"The characters and plot of this book will definitely appeal to moms with young kids. But the book's preoccupation with what makes a life meaningful also ensures that it would be a worthwhile read for any woman or man mulling over how to live a life of significance while navigating through the everyday maze of needy people and duty-filled circumstances....Hinck's skill with language... and her comedic timing in telling this modern parable will delight anyone who enjoys good writing. All that to say, don't miss this supermom saga."

"Hinck does a wonderful job of creating a character that is everything a Christian Stay-At-Home Mom wants to be then throws her some curves to give readers some valuable lessons. Hinck has given readers a superb relationship between Becky and her husband Kevin, by drawing us into the relationship and giving them conflict that is real. Stay-At-Home Moms and their husbands will really enjoy this book, filled with realistic experiences and truly faithful women. The Secret Life of Becky Miller is a great read for those Moms struggling with their faith and how to fit their roles in the big picture."

" The Secret Life of Becky Miller is written with humor and an insider's knowledge of the challenges and joys a mom experiences when she spends all of her waking hours and many of the nighttime ones caring for those she will most influence in her life--her kids. This book is definitely recommended."

"As I started reading, I found myself laughing out loud at numerous occasions early on, prompting my wife to wonder if I was reading a new comedy novel. In actuality, I was laughing because the scenes with Becky's family were so incredibly familiar. This is real life, true stories adapted into fiction. And it's great, great stuff."

"The Secret Life of Becky Miller will renew your passion for God’s purpose. With the down-to-earth, funny, compassionate Becky Miller by your side, you’ll learn that you too are extraordinary in God’s eyes-even when drowning in laundry, spilled milk, and children’s demands.

"Readers will admire Becky’s zeal for living and passion to have a strong, godly family. She’s not a phony; she struggles with jealousy and impatience like the rest of us, yet her life demonstrates an unwavering rock-solid trust in a mighty God.... Hinck’s debut novel is more than a breezy, fun read. Becky Miller’s inspirational outlook on life is worth emulating."

"No preaching here. Hinck delivers a lighthearted and humorous look at a mom striving to be all that she can be for God. The "fantasy" scenes are succinct, with matching analogies throughout each chapter."

The title pays homage to James Thurber's story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Like Mitty, Becky retreats into daydreams for relief from her insecurities. Unlike the Thurber character, this young suburbanite holds to a strong religious faith to guide her through the typical problems, serious and petty, she faces as a wife and mother in an uncertain world. The novel is for listeners who believe that God weeps at the fall of a sparrow. Possessed of a young mom voice, narrator Johanna Parker barely skirts making a Stepford Wife out of her protagonist. Her talents well match this material in tone and quality. Y.R. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
