What he discovers crammed in the masonry of a wall is an extremely old pocket watch that he is certain is worth a large sum and might just help him and his mother leave the poor part of town. Instead, he realizes that the watch has a little bit of magic in it, which gives him a special ability. Regrettably, the Directions learn of the presence of the watch, and they will stop at nothing to bring it to the Smoke. Only Reuben and his newfound friends have what it takes to solve the mystery of the watch and save their city. Opening with the sound of a ticking clock, this audiobook introduces the atmosphere of mystery that surrounds an unusual “clock-watch,” which holds many secrets. While darker and more ominous than Stewart’s usual fare, the book does include the puzzles his fans eagerly expect and enjoy solving. Cameron Brown’s narration enhances the story’s atmosphere. He employs clear enunciation and expert pacing to immerse the listener in Reuben’s mind as he puzzles his way through the mystery. Brown’s performance will engage young listeners who enjoy being on tenterhooks and feeling deliciously scared as they inhabit a dark world. He uses inflection to give unique voices to the many characters. Mrs. Genevieve, Reuben’s moral compass, is especially well voiced with an appropriately foreign but grandmotherly accent. N.E.M. Reuben discovers there are really two watches and whoever holds both becomes immortal. Convinced The Smoke already possesses the other watch, methodical Reuben must rely on moxie and wits to confront him on his own turf.
