The Second Husband: A Novel

A woman's seemingly perfect second marriage is rocked by a discovery about the death of her first husband in this twisty psychological thriller from Kate White, the New York Times*bestselling author*whom Entertainment Weekly called “impossible to outwit.”*

Recovering from the unsolved murder of her first husband, Derrick, thirtysomething Emma Hawke has built a new life with Tom, a handsome, successful, and loving widower who finally makes her feel safe again.

Then one day a police detective shows up at their house on the Connecticut shore, asking questions about Derrick's death. Emma was sure she'd been cleared in the days after the tragedy. So why is law enforcement taking another look now-and questioning the timing of her relationship with Tom? She hadn't even met him until after Derrick's death.

Then Emma is shocked to discover that, in fact, she and her second husband attended the same business dinner two months before Derrick's murder. Did Tom, unbeknownst to Emma, spot her there? Could he have set his sights on her and orchestrated a plan to make her his wife, whatever the cost.

With twists and turns all the way to the last page, this fast-paced, expertly plotted novel will have you asking that age-old question: how well do you really know the ones you love?

JUNE 2022 - AudioFile

Leslie Howard convincingly portrays the sympathetic Emma Hawke, a widow who has remarried and is trying to figure out whom she can trust. The first part of the audiobook weaves back and forth from “then,” when Emma’s first husband Derrick is murdered in lower Manhattan, to “now,” 27 months later when she is happily married to her second husband, Tom. Howard successfully differentiates the many men and women who come into Emma’s life, including a brooding teenage stepdaughter. Using pacing, appropriate emotion, and tone, Howard ramps up the tension to keep listeners eager to identify the murderer. The plot is mainly driven through dialogue, which Howard delivers masterfully as she shepherds listeners through all of the twists, turns, and reveals to the surprising denouement. At the start of this meandering domestic thriller from bestseller White (The Fiancée), Emma Hawke, the owner of a business research company specializing in forecasting trends, is awakened late one night by New York City police detectives knocking at the door of her Madison, N.J., home. Her husband, Derrick Rand, was shot and killed in SoHo a few hours earlier. The case is never solved, and Emma has never admitted to anyone “how deeply troubled her marriage had been.” Twenty-seven months later, Emma has married again—to genial widower Tom Halliday, the owner of an advertising firm—and moved to Westport, Conn., “a town that’s part well-heeled suburb, part old New England village.” Her business is thriving, and she’s set on making new friends. Then, the New York police come knocking again, this time to inform her that they’re reopening the investigation into Derrick’s death. Another murder, embezzlement, a long-hidden fraud, and a petulant stepchild are added to the mix in an unsuccessful attempt to keep tension high. Those looking for nail-biting suspense should look elsewhere. Hopefully, White will return to form next time. Agent: Sandra Dijkstra, Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. (June)
