Overview

The Scorpion’s Song is set in the days leading up to the Gulf War, when thousands of American soldiers were deployed to Saudi Arabia. An ambivalent young Sergeant with a traumatic past struggles to deal with the leadership challenges of the environment and his own ethical ambivalence as he tries to live up to what is expected of him. Help comes in the form of a scorpion, who visits him in his dreams and tries to teach him how to think for himself, and leads him towards becoming a more unified, authentic self.

About the Author

Dan Ralph grew up in North Philadelphia and lived in Western Pennsylvania for a few years before entering the service. During his eight years in the Army, he served in the Gulf War and performed missions in Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Korea, the Netherlands, and Yugoslavia. During his time in the Gulf, he worked in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. After leaving the service he studied philosophy, psychology and English at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in the Humanities degree from California State University - Dominguez Hills, with an emphasis in philosophy. A lover of ideas, Dan writes philosophical fiction to make important ideas accessible to readers who are unlikely to read original works by philosophers like Nietzsche and Adorno. In The Scorpion’s Song, he has applied key principles from Hannah Arendt’s Life of the Mind and other works to begin telling the fictional story of a young Sergeant confronting ethical quandaries and leadership challenges during Operation Desert Shield.
