The Scars We Carry: A Breast Cancer Memoir in Poems portrays life before, during, and after cancer. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 years old. Since I was at a higher risk of developing breast cancer due to the family history, I started having yearly mammograms when I was 28 years old. Eleven years later, the first calcifications were discovered, and at 41 years old, I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Prior to the diagnosis, I was getting two mammograms and two manual exams per year. If not for the intense monitoring, life may have turned out differently for me.
Even with having a family history of breast cancer, I was still not prepared for the experience.

Her love of reading poetry started in childhood when her father purchased her first book of poetry by Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu. Laura writes her poems from the heart and takes inspiration from her memories and from observing her surroundings. She writes about loss, grief, fighting cancer, and finding joy in the moment. Laura hopes to make a connection to the readers who are experiencing the loss of a loved one, cancer patients fighting the disease, and those who enjoy reading poetry.
