Description: In addition to providing an in-depth explanation of the pathophysiology of scar formation and management, this book has excellent discussions that integrate scientific data with practical treatment approaches depending on the type of the scar, its location on the body, and complicating factors such as infection.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists in the prevention of scars as well as their diagnosis and treatment.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists.
Features: Among a number of unique features, there are therapeutic decision ladders for treatment of hypertrophic scars, detailed drawings of how to do surgical revisions of scars to release tension on wounds, and even a chapter devoted to tips on using camouflage makeup to minimize the appearance of scars. Numerous boxes throughout the book highlight the authors' tips and tricks in treatment. They have helpfully included specific doses and treatment parameters for devices such as lasers, intense pulsed light, chemical peels, photodynamic therapy, etc.
Assessment: This book provides a strong foundation for understanding the inflammatory cytokines and growth factors involved in wound healing and scar formation and how to modify these processes to minimize hypertrophic/atrophic scar formation by using a variety of immunomodulating agents and light devices. This is a superb resource for medical, cosmetic, and surgical dermatologists.
