The Sandlot Strategy
The Sandlot Strategy is a manual designed specifically to help anyone coach children in baseball. It is a very practical book designed to encourage and equip parents and coaches for tackling the challenges of little league.

As a sandlot coach, you have to do two things:

1) Manage the game and all that it entails. There is a lot of psychology that goes on in managing the game and making sure that everyone gets "home" safely.

2) Teach the game. There is a lot to teach. Everyone demands everything. They want you to know everything and to be able to teach it.

This is a manual that will help you do both.

Combined with Bill's 25 years of coaching children and expert assistance from professionals including George Brett, Kevin Seitzer, Ned Yost, Mike MacFarlane, Brent Kenmitz, Brian Holman, Frank White, Bobby Randall, Les Norman, Joe Simpson, and several others, this book provides a roadmap and a plan that will help you teach kids. It will equip you with strategies to provide a nurturing environment for the ultimate coaches in a young persons life, their parents.

Our goal is to help you prepare for what is coming. The Sandlot is a blast. From little league practices, to Game Day contests and life lessons throughout, it never hurts to know which pitch is coming. Take what yu like, mix it up with your own personal style and get out there and have fun.

As George says in the Forward, "The Sandlot Strategy is also designed to encourage partents to take a swing at coaching, relax and enjoy that short period of time their kids are under their watch. I loved just being 'Dad,' being called 'Coach' by the boys and being a part of their childhood in the sandlot. It certainly has gone by fast. Time really flies. Take the time to read this book, then put it down, go outside, and have some fun in 'the sandlot' while you can. Your kid will love you for it, no matter how much you know or what sport it is. They jsut want you there. Teach them the game and stuff about life the best way you know and let them have fun. Remember, it's just a game. As we watched our boys grow through little league, high school, and on out the door, we know we didn't miss anything, and we had fun. As their parents,w e definitely had the most fun."

About the Author

Gene Stephenson, one of the winningest coaches in college baseball history, says that "Bill Severns worked harder than any player that I ever had ... because he needed to." As a sophomore at his Tulsa (Hale) high school, Severns was cut from the baseball team on the first day of practice. Seven years later, he finished a college baseball career at the University of Oklahoma as the Sooners career leader in games played, hits, extra base hits, total bases, triples, stolen bases, and runs scored.

Severns' hard work paid off in college. A starter from day one, he played on four Big 8 conference championship teams and in the College World Series four consecutive years. His teams compiled a record of 178-47, a .791 winning percentage. Despite being drafted by the New York Yankees, the fabled franchise of his boyhood hero - fellow Oklahoman Mickey Mantle (both wore number 7) - in the June 1974 draft, then by the San Francisco Giants in January 1975, Severns returned to Norman for his senior year. After serving as team co-captain and president of the OU Fellowship of Christian Atheletes while completing his degree in business management, Severns became a first round draft choice of the Milwaukee Brewers in the June 1975 secondary draft.

Severns played professionally for six years in the Brewers organization, batting .300 for Vancouver at the Triple A level, before retiring from baseball to raise a family with his wife, Suzanne.

Severns' involvement in the game since then harkens back to the final weeks of his college career. In May 1975, quoted by a newspaper columnist, he said, "Coaching is a learning process, too, I guess." It was a good guess. Now, with twenty-three years of experience as a youth baseball coach, he has learned a lot in the process. Keepers of the Sandlot was his first book, answering the call to share a lifetime of experience with others.

Bill and his wife, Suzanne, have ben married for 34 years and live in Prairie Village, Kansas. They have four children and five grandchildren with #6 due in time for the 2012 World Series.
