About the Author

Linda L. Lowry, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts–Amherst. Her degrees include an M.A. in tourism development and travel administration from the George Washington University, Washington, DC, and a PhD in communication from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of Massachusetts–Amherst.

Dr. Lowry is a social scientist and qualitative researcher who takes a critical lens and locates herself in the constructivist paradigm. Her research and teaching interests include the social, cultural, and economic impacts of tourism; sustainable tourism development; tourism policy, planning, and development; slow tourism; rural and agricultural tourism; theory development; and qualitative research methods.

She has received various awards and grants for research, teaching, and service learning from the University of Massachusetts and has participated in a research grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for work on cultural tourism. In addition, she has published in the Journal of Hospitality&Tourism Education, the New England Journal of Travel&Tourism, and the Journal of Vacation Marketing, among others. She is currently at work on a book on tourism policy, planning, and development compiling international case studies of best practices.
