About the Author

Joseph Bédier (1864-1938) was a professor of medieval French literature at the Université de Fribourg, Switzerland and the Collège de France, Paris. His theories of medieval songs and stories remain influential among scholars. He also co-edited a landmark study of French literature.

 

Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870-1953) was born near Paris and became a naturalized British subject in 1902. A member of Parliament (1906-1910) and frequent collaborator with G. K. Chesterton, he is best known for his writings on Catholicism. He published more than 150 volumes, including novels, essays, biographies, verse, and travel writing.
