The Remarkable Miss Digby
In 1853, only a lunatic would consider crossing the Syrian desert to see the Roman ruins at Palmyra. Most travellers from Europe rash enough to venture into the desert are never seen again, and a woman considering such a journey, without her husband, is preposterous. When Jane Digby, the Lady Ellenborough, granddaughter of the Earl of Leicester, informs the British Consul in Damascus that this is what she intends to do, he quickly learns she's a woman who brooks
no argument.

Jane Digby's scandalous life has been well chronicled. She spent her last decades in Syria and in this enthralling book, author Patricia Donovan, drawing on her own experience in the Syrian desert, imagines Jane's life in that wild land. In Syria, Jane hopes at last to settle, only to discover a world of recklessness and integrity, of cruelty and desire, and where her own passion is stirred more than she ever dared hope for.

The Remarkable Miss Digby is a hauntingly beautiful story, of a woman determined to escape the confines of her class and gender, and living during a time of religious and cultural upheaval which uncannily mirrors our own.

About the Author

New Zealand author Patricia Donovan writes to explore the human condition and her stories are, ultimately, about her characters, what happens to them, what drives them. But the initial idea, what starts her writing, always comes from circumstances, a situation of some sort, such as societal derision, or bullying, or repressive governance. This situation is what creates the moral or emotional dilemma for her characters find themselves in. Without that dilemma, she says, there is nothing for them to respond to.
Although Donovan’s novels, so far, cross three genres – from the past to the future with a thriller in between – they share a common thread: a woman’s journey and her quest, in the face of obstacles, to find her strengths – and happiness – and make her way in the world.
Patricia Donovan grew up in Christchurch and attended the University of Canterbury where she earned an MA (Hons) in English Literature. She is a member of the New Zealand Society of Authors and of the New Zealand Writers Guild.
