The Reawakening of Ancient Empires
This book evaluates the stagnant status of the field of Comparative Imperial History, primarily challenging the field's foundational assumptions by Lenin and Hobson which have hitherto gone substantially unchallenged. The work looks at how three Empires transformed the Ancient World – Rome, China, and Assyria - and advances a new theory of how Ancient Imperial Governments functioned economically. The book engages extensively with the Neo-Assyrian Period, Early Han Dynasty of China, and Rome during the 'Empire of the Caesars', examining a broad range of primary texts, iconographic evidence, and archaeological discoveries to illuminate multiple, comparative perspectives, drawing in modern examples from the British Empire where applicable, and emphasizing the extent to which these Ancient Empires were economically-forward thinking actors. Steering a course between imposing modernity on the past sources and overemphasis on taking the evidence at only face value, the work highlights the consequences of these imperial systems and the several flaws these studies reveal for the Lenin and Hobson model, and in doing so offers new insights into the field of Comparative Imperial History.
