The Real Life of Colley: Part Three:Craving Purpose
When World War I was being fought in Europe, J.P. Colley was living a comfortable life in Southern California. Then one day he received a telegram from the YMCA headquarters in New York requesting him to leave his wife and four small children to, as a "Y" man, help support the Allied troops with fitness and morale. This diary captures a short period of time when he first arrived in France and questioned what his purpose being there was - and was it worth it. Little did he know, he would soon be thrust onto the frontline as he writes in Real Life of Colley - Part One: Into the Burning World.

About the Author

Joseph Pickering Colley was born in Rosedale, England in 1879. As a young man, he traveled to the United States in 1905. Upon arrival at Ellis Island, he boarded a train to Pennsylvania where he got work in a coal mine. He then traveled to San Francisco and was there when the 1906 earthquake occurred. When Joseph was 39 years old, he received a telegram from YMCA headquarters to report to France to help with morale and physical fitness of the Allied Troops. Unexpectedly, he ended up on the front line in The Battle of Chateau-Thierry. So far, three diaries have been discovered by his granddaughter in the family's garage. Joseph writes in detail and exhibits the tenderness of his heart and mind, while also including historical details.
