OMG wailed Kitty as she watched the contents of the coffee cup spread slowly over the keyboard. Not only was her thesis ruined, but the laptop was making threatening flashes. What else could possibly go wrong this week?

Sally heard footsteps and cringed back against the wall in fear. The heavy wooden door creaked open and a figure was silhouetted against the light. She couldn’t see the face, but he was of stocky build and was wearing combat gear. She desperately tried to make out some feature so that she would recognise him again, but the light was too dim. ‘Who are you?

Why am I here? What are you going to do? All these questions came tumbling out and Sally was on the edge of hysteria. The figure said nothing, just turned and walked out.

Maud Harris is a retired nurse. She writes mystery books set around a hospital theme. Her first autobiographical story 'Three Years in Starch' is an account of nurse training in the late 1950's to early 1960's. having travelled extensively, she is now settled in the Nottingham area.
