The Pulpit Is Waiting: A Guide for Pastoral Preaching

Dr. Joe H. Cothen’s The Pulpit is Waiting shares his insights in teaching how to preach—which lies at the very core of a pastor’s work.

Drawing on more than forty years of experience as a pastor and instructor, Dr. Cothen explains how to balance the responsibilities towards congregation and church while still maintaining the ability to communicate and connect with parishioners—especially teenagers—through preaching.

In the pulpit, the preacher must maintain a relationship with listeners through more than sermons full of Biblical references. The lessons to be learned from the Bible can be applied to everyone’s daily circumstances through association. The Good News can be delivered in a variety of life affirming ways through stories that foster understanding and community that will help people recognize the miraculous in the ordinary.

Such strategies capture the congregation's attention, and only by maintaining the interest of the congregation is the pastor able to convey his message—and His message.
