About the Author

Edward Scribner Ames (1870-1958) was a professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago, with special interest in psychology and sociology of religion.  As a member of the Chicago School of Pragmatism, he advanced an understanding of God similar to that of John Dewey, with specific emphasis on the humanity of Jesus, the denial of an afterlife and the diminished role of baptism. He served as the Dean of the Disciples Divinity House in Chicago from 1927 to 1945.   Other publications include Away with God and Christianity (1935) and Religion (1949).
