About the Author

Paul O'Connor founded The Adept Group in 1984 with a single focus: improving innovation and product management in large companies. Today, his clients include a long list of global companies across nearly every industry.

O'Connor began his career with a leading innovation and strategy "Think Tank," using original open innovation methods. Paul led and simplified innovation initiatives at major companies like Exxon and Procter & Gamble. He worked with pioneers in practices such as project screening, staged development, portfolio management, and intrapreneurship.

From 1990 to 1992, O'Connor served as president of the Product Development and Management Association, a leading proponent of best practices in innovation and product management. Paul played a key role in shaping PDMA's first certification test for professional recognition. He also helped set up foundational research on best practices and measuring new product success.

Paul has published in peer-reviewed journals and business publications. He was among the original contributors to PDMA's Handbook of Product Development in 1996 and 2008. He also wrote for PDMA's 2004 ToolBook and was a contributing editor to R&D Magazine. His work also appeared in the respected Journal of Product Innovation Management.

O'Connor teaches master courses in product line strategy and is a frequent speaker at corporate meetings and seminars. His topics include Product Line Strategy, Roadmapping, Portfolio Analytics, and Innovation Productivity ... focused on large organizations.

O'Connor earned a Bachelor of Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and Master of Business Administration from Babson College.

At Babson, Paul supported the faculty in creating the first Entrepreneurship curriculum. Paul's job was to find, organize, and deliver articles and books professors requested from the Harvard Business School Baker Library and other locations around Boston. He was selected for this job because he owned a car, a strategic advantage the other two candidates, both foreign, could not match. More than once, Paul says, his advantage won him the right to empty the garbage which the Finance group frequently overproduced. Today, outside his professional activities, Paul spends much of his free time involved with family, music, and dogs.
