Enormous as is the literature on Miracles of the last quarter of a century, there is a place found for the Bishop of Southampton's "Hulsean Lectures." For they are historical, and the historical aspect has not been fully presented yet. They are historical in the sense that their author asks what the miracles of the Bible were to the Jews and early Christians, not what they are to us. He places himself beside those for whom and among whom the miracles were wrought. That is the only historical method. That is the only method that yields valuable results. In short, Dr. Lyttelton does for miracles what has been already done for prophecy. He discovers what the men of the day thought about them.
