Description: This is a practical, well-organized, well-presented handbook for trainees and providers who rotate and work in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The information is presented in bullet point format and is easily accessible, especially at a moment's notice. The book is organized into two sections: general pediatric critical care and an organ system approach.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a readily accessible resource for providers including nurses, nurse practitioners, medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians who are rotating and/or working in the PICU. As someone who practiced in a number of PICUs (and NICUs) for about 35 years, I find the objectives definitely worthy and the author and contributors have definitely achieved them. What is also interesting about this book is that the author notes that it has been an internal resource over the years that has been revised and refined, which means it has been subject to serial review by a variety of providers with varied experience.
Audience: This book is intended for providers with all levels of experience rotating and working in the PICU. This includes nurses, nurse practitioners, medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians who need to learn or refresh their memories about the care of critically ill children cared for in the PICU. This book definitely meets the needs of this intended audience and is a readily accessible resource. The author and contributors are credible authorities with years of clinical experience.
Features: The first section on general pediatric critical care includes formulas, resuscitation and stabilization, aspects of surgical critical care, and pharmacology. I was especially impressed that it also includes discussions of effective communication with patients and families, family-centered rounds, palliative care, and ethics. It also includes an excellent section on transport. The second section is organized by organ systems, which is the way many providers organize their thoughts when caring for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents in the PICU.
Assessment: This handbook is an outstanding, clinically practical resource for all clinical caretakers of pediatric patients in the PICU. It is concise and includes the relevant information providers need when they rotate and work in the PICU. As Dr. Rozenfeld states in the preface, this book, in some form, has been an internal resource that she developed and has evolved during her years working in the PICU. She has recruited an excellent, clinically experienced group of contributors to revise and update this book for publication, which also includes very current references. This handbook would be an excellent resource for providers in every intensive care unit that cares for children. I also think it would be useful as a resource in emergency rooms and pediatric units as critically ill children present intermittently or sometimes deteriorate at unpredictable times.
