Overview

The Philip K. Dick Reader

Beyond Lies the Wub. The slovenly wub might well have said: Many men talk like philosophers and live like fools.

The Second Variety. The claws were bad enough in the first place—nasty, crawling little death-robots. But when they began to imitate their creators, it was time for the human race to make peace—if it could!

The Defenders. No weapon has ever been frightful enough to put a stop to war — perhaps because we never before had any that thought for themselves!

The Eyes Have It. A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way....The Eyes Have It

The Hanging Stranger. Ed had always been a practical man, when he saw something was wrong
he tried to correct it. Then one day he saw it hanging in the town square.

The Variable Man. He fixed things—clocks, refrigerators, vidsenders and destinies. But he had no business in the future, where the calculators could not handle him. He was Earth's only hope—and its sure failure! Security Commissioner Reinhart rapidly climbed the front steps and entered the Council building. Council guards stepped quickly aside and he entered the familiar place of great whirring machines. His thin face rapt, eyes alight with emotion, Reinhart gazed intently up at the central SRB computer, studying its reading.

Tony and the Beetles. A ten-year-old boy grows up fast when history catches up with the human race.

About the Author

About The Author
Philip K. Dick (December 16, 1928 – March 2, 1982) was an American science fiction writer. He wrote 44 novels and about 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. His fiction explored varied philosophical and social themes, and featured recurrent elements such as alternate realities, simulacra, monopolistic corporations, drug abuse, authoritarian governments, and altered states of consciousness, and often explored topics such as the nature of reality, perception, human nature, and identity. Born in Chicago, Dick moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his family at a young age. He began publishing science fiction stories in 1952, at age 23. He found little commercial success until his alternative history novel "The Man in the High Castle" (1962) earned him acclaim, including a Hugo Award for Best Novel, when he was 33. He followed with science fiction novels such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) and Ubik (1969). His 1974 novel "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said" won the 'John W. Campbell Memorial Award' for Best Science Fiction Novel.
