About the Author

Felissa R. Lashley, PhD, RN, FABMGG, is former dean and professor at the College of Nursing at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Prior to that, she was a dean and professor at the Southern Illinois University—Edwardsville and a clinical professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University—Springfield. She is the first nurse to be certified as a PhD medical geneticist by the American Board of Medical Genetics, and is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. She began her practice of genetic evaluation and counseling in 1973.

Jerry D. Durham, PhD, RN., FAAN, is Chancellor and Professor of Nursing at Allen College, Waterloo, Iowa.

Purpose:According to the editors, the book "serves as an essential guide for nurses and health care professionals" caring for patients who are HIV/AIDS positive. As the number of clients with HIV/ADIS who are living longer is growing, it is increasingly likely that healthcare professionals will encounter these individuals.
Audience:Nurses and healthcare professionals caring for clients with HIV/AIDS are the intended audience.
Features:The book's three sections cover core issues, preventing, diagnosing and managing HIV disease, and special populations. In each section contributors discuss an aspect or population. For example, special populations include caregivers, minority, women, children, and the aging. There are minimal illustrations, but tables highlight information.
Assessment:This is an excellent reference for those caring for clients with HIV/AIDS. The book is fairly comprehensive and encourages a holistic approach. I strongly recommend this book.
