Adolescent substance abuse is the nation's #1 public health problem. It originates out of a developmental era where experimentation with the world is increasingly taking place, and where major changes in physical self and social relationships are taking place. These changes cannot be understood by any one discipline nor can they be described by focusing only on the behavioral and social problems of this age period, the characteristics of normal development, or the pharmacology and addictive potential of specific drugs. The Handbook is organized into eight sections covering the literature on the developmental context of this life period, the epidemiology of adolescent use and abuse, similarities and differences in use, addictive potential, and consequences of use for different drugs; etiology and course as characterized at different levels of mechanistic analysis ranging from the genetic and neural to the behavioural and social. Two sections cover the clinical ramifications of abuse, and prevention and intervention strategies to most effectively deal with these problems. The Handbook's last section addresses the role of social policy in framing the problem, in addressing it, and explores its potential role in alleviating it.

About the Author

Robert A. Zucker is Professor in Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of Michigan, Director Emeritus of their Addiction Research Center and the Department of Psychiatry's Substance Abuse Section. His career focus has been the lifespan etiology of substance abuse and the development of early identification and intervention programming. He is internationally known for his research contributions to the understanding of alcoholism as a developmental disorder, and has been involved with its translational ramifications via consultancies at NIH and by developing substance abuse research infrastructure in Eastern Europe. He is a Steering Committee member and site PI for NIH's national ABCD study, author of over 300 publications and 11 books, and is recipient of the Research Society on Alcoholism's Distinguished Researcher Award. He is also past-President of the Society on Addiction Psychology. Sandra A. Brown, Vice Chancellor for Research and Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, is internationally recognized for developmentally focused alcohol and drug research. Her primary research focuses on the impact of alcohol and other drugs on human development, progression of substance involvement, and factors influencing transitions into and out of youth alcohol and drug problems. Her research yielded pioneering information on relapse, long-term outcomes, and effective treatment for youth. She has held numerous scientific leadership positions, with awards from NIH, APA and RSA. She has more than 35 grants and 350 publications and helped lead the national effort to establish screening and early intervention guidelines for youth. She co-directs the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence and Coordinating Center of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Purpose: According to the book, the purpose is to "[provide] the most comprehensive summary to date of current knowledge about substance abuse during life's most tumultuous developmental stage."
Audience: The book indicates it is written for scholars and graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. The authors are credible authorities. Robert A. Zucker is a professor at University of Michigan. He is interested in the lifespan etiology of substance abuse, especially alcoholism. He has published over 300 articles and 11 books. Sandra A. Brown is a professor at University of California San Diego. Her research focuses on the impact of substance abuse on human development. She has won awards for her work and has over 350 publications. The other contributors are affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning.
Features: The book begins with an introductory section. Adolescence is often the time when substance use begins and is escalated, along with other risky behaviors that can result in health problems. Substance abuse can be seen as a developmental disorder, which may increase through early adulthood. Part II looks at epidemiology, which depends on self-report information. Alcohol is the most popular substance, with almost half of all high school seniors reporting use. In terms of preventable death, tobacco continues to be the leading cause. Part III focuses on the similarities and differences of various substances. Approximately 11% of high school seniors use tobacco, even though this rate has declined in past decades, and half of all 12th graders have tried cannabis. Abuse of prescription drugs has also become more prevalent among adolescents. Part IV focuses on etiology. Research involving animal models reveals long lasting consequences such as cognitive and emotional difficulties. There are also risk factors involving core deficits that begin early in childhood, influencing future substance use. Part V discusses developmental tasks related to substance abuse. It is not easy to trace peer interactions to drug use. Part VI describes comorbidities in substance abuse. There is a significant correlation with other psychiatric disorders in adolescence as compared to other age groups. Part VII examines assessment and intervention strategies. There are psychological instruments with good psychometric properties. Twelve-step approaches have shown to be effective with both adults and adolescents. The book ends with a discussion of social policy and future research recommendations. It is easy to read and contains numerous figures and tables.
Assessment: Readers will not be disappointed by this excellent book written by experts in the field. It gives a comprehensive look at adolescent substance abuse, with 36 chapters and over 800 pages of research findings, along with hundreds of references.
