Van Anderson hits the ground running in the breathless middle volume of his medical thriller trilogy featuring Dr. David McBride (after 2014’s The Organ Takers). McBride and his mentor, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, were dismissed from NYU Medical Center’s Department of Surgery two years earlier after allegations that they accepted bribes to move patients up on a transplant wait list. In the prior book, Turnbull abducted and killed McBride’s wife and unborn child, and this sequel opens with McBride’s revenge: he injects Turnbull with a chemical that causes his former friend to suffocate. McBride manages to escape from the NYPD with the help of a shadowy NSA agent, Richard Whitestone, who offers McBride a deal: if the doctor uses Turnbull’s research to grow a kidney for Whitestone’s dying daughter, the operative will help keep McBride’s one surviving family member, his father, from being permanently sedated in a psychiatric ward. Robin Cook fans will appreciate Van Anderson’s skill at combining action with plausible extrapolations of what is currently medically possible. (BookLife)
In the second book of the McBride trilogy, Dr. David McBride enters the story having committed an egregious act that transgresses both moral and civil law. Left with no semblance of a normal life-his family, freedom, and humanity stripped away-he resigns to accept his fate and face whatever punishment is forthcoming. But, David McBride is too valuable a commodity to languish in prison, and he soon finds himself caught between opposing forces-a corporate spy representing a Russian biotech firm, and a man trying to save his daughter's life-who are battling for control of the tissue engineering and organ fabrication technologies that are vital to the growth of human organs in the laboratory.
