Kentucky-born Brown (1815-1884) escaped from slavery in 1834 to become a physician, abolitionist, reformer, author, and public speaker. Originally published in 1867 (Lee & Shephard), Brown's text was the first military history of African Americans, underscoring their sacrifices during America's wars and their loyalty to the Union. The new edition features an introduction by John David Smith (history, N. Carolina State U.) which places the text within the context of Brown's other works, assesses it as a military history, and examines Brown's interpretation of black masculinity and honor, and his assessment of 19th century racial tensions. About the Author

William Wells Brown (1814-1884), a former slave and abolitionist leader, wrote the first novel published by an African American. He wrote the first military history of African Americans, The Negro in the American Rebellion. This text assailed those whose hatred and ignorance inclined them to keep blacks oppressed after Appomattox.

A distinguished professor of history at North Carolina State University, John David Smith has enjoyed many scholarly honors and awards.
