The Natural Method: Self Defense Techniques
This chapter of the Functional Exercises portion of Hébert's Natural Method and Practical Guide to Physical Education is, by Hébert's own accord, complete in its own, standalone in terms of providing fundamental movements and functionality at once. It is also, next to the swimming chapter, the longest and most detailed chapter, hence published as a standalone. While many methods of fighting have sprouted in the last century, Hébert's work is very thorough, complete and provides the minimum effective dose of knowledge everyone should acquire to be proficient and useful to protect oneself or others. The drills are well pictured and detailed and simply applicable and universal, likely borrowed from other martial arts training.

About the Author

Philippe Til is a seasoned martial artist of close to three decades, and a fitness entrepreneur. After a spinal injury left him nearly immobilized and threatened with spinal fusion, Philippe sought out the skills and education to become a personal trainer with an emphasis of corrective exercises, as well as natural movement patterns.
Having received instruction from leaders in their own field (kettlebells, Indian Clubs, Functional Movement Systems, Wildfitness etc.), Philippe eventually invented equipment that would combined all the fitness modalities and systems he learned into one product.
At the urging of Dr Ed Thomas, he committed his free time to translate the works of Georges Hébert, whose methods hold a strong place in the annals of Historical Fitness and still stand the test of time (French is Philippe's native language, and fitness is his passion and profession).

Successful fitness programs being about setting goals. When asked what his goal is, the answer always remains: longevity. With an active lifestyle that includes surfing, snowboarding and two active young sons, being able to move well and into later years is of utmost importance and he wants to share that with everyone who reads the books!
