About the Author

William C. Everhart according to current NPS director Russell Dickenson, has credentials for commenting on the NPS that "are as good as a man can have." He began his career in the NPS in 1951 as park historian, and after his retirement in 1977 from the position of assistant to the director for policy, he has been a visiting professor at Clemson University and a consultant to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson.
