[This version published in August 2013. Previous reviews are for other editions]

News of a strange crime spreads like wildfire in Paris. Someone has attempted to murder the daughter of a brilliant scientist. But nobody can explain how the murderer got in and out of the locked room of her isolated country home. Only Joseph Rouletabille, an impatient young journalist, has the genius to solve this crime. But can he match wits with a seemingly supernatural killer?

Written Gaston Leroux, famed journalist and author of "The Phantom of the Opera" and edited and introduced by Alastair Gray, our Suspense Classics edition is illustrated with beautiful paintings and sketches from 19th-century France.

It also features updated maps and revised text in standard English for an easier read.

About the Author

Gaston Leroux:

Born in Paris in 1868, Gaston Leroux was a famed reporter and writer who died in 1927 at age 59. This author led a colorful life, which in and of itself is an entertaining read. The son of a prominent public works contractor, Leroux is said to have inherited a family fortune at a young age and spent it at a remarkable pace. He became a lawyer and dabbled in writing fiction. After three years of lawyering, he became a crime reporter, and covered France’s most sensational trials.

Leroux turned to writing novels in the early 1900s. He saw success with The Mystery of the Yellow Room in 1907 and won yet more fame with the classic Phantom of the Opera, first published in 1909. His creation of the youthful crime-solving Joseph Rouletabille in the The Mystery of the Yellow Room was so popular in Europe and in the United States that Leroux wrote a series of adventure capers featuring the reporter/detective character.

Alastair Gray is an aficionado of history and classic European literature. A proficient editor and translator, Gray enjoys reading, visiting museums, and a good curry.
